Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played each summer's day
Soliders both, of course

One little chap had a mishap
He broke off his horse's head
Then for his toy, he cried with joy
When he heard his brother say...

"Do you think I could leave you cryin'
When there's room on my horse for you
Come up here, Jack, and stop your cryin'
We'll mend up your horsie with glue

"When we grow up, we'll both be soldiers
And our horses, they won't be toys
And maybe we will remember
When we were two little boys"

Long years have passed and war come at last
Then bravely they both marched away
Cannons roared loud amid the wild crowd
Where wounded and dying. Joe lay

Then came a cry, a rider dashed by
Out from the ranks of the blue
Galloped away to where Joe lay
Then he heard his brother say...

"Do you think I could leave you dyin'
When there's room on my horse for you?
Climb up here, Joe, we'll soon be flyin'
To the ranks of the boys in the blue"

"Can't you see, Jack, I'm all a-tremble
It might be the flash or the noise
It might be because I remember
When we were two little boys"
